"The brain keeps working for seven minutes after the heart dies. We still have six more minutes to play!"
That's right ladies and gents everybody's creepiest dream master has finally made his return to the silver screen. Now originally I was going to post a video review but do to technical difficulties I couldn't so here is just a short review.
The Good
Jackie Earl Haley deserves a round of applause in my opinion. Alot of people said they didn't like him as the role and they should have given it back to Robert Englund, but first off guys we gotta move on ok, I understand that alot of people don't like to see one of their favorite characters to get recasted but it happens. Second Robert refused to have anything to do with the movie since they didn't talk to original creator Wes Craven about the remake until after they had already started production (in other words Wes was pissed enough Robert had enough sense to stay outta the way). Next the girl that picked up the role of Nancy also did a fantastic job in my opinion. Moving on anyone who has seen the originals knows Freddy was a pedophile, one thing I liked was the remake didn't try to "beat around the bush" with that fact, they made it apparent and defined. Furthermore, the plot twist they added to the movie was fantastic, it gave the movie a beautiful mood of suspense because no one was expecting this. Another thing the movie did great was that while they did have the comical one liner's (all were dark humor which was a plus) the movie made it apparent that Freddy wasn't there just to kill and make jokes, he was there to torture these kids and get his revenge. Referring back to the plot twist a minute, the new idea really helped explain why Freddy was going after the children of Elm Street to get his revenge rather than going after the parents that actually killed him (in the originals) and seeking revenge from them.
The Bad
To begin with a few of the characters (Kris played by Katie Cassidy) were really hard to believe at times. I mean there were times that I could believe these people were actually scared, sometimes it seemed they were literally just there to get their paycheck and then leave. Next I was disappointed in the CGI. No not because there wasn't enough, because there was way to much, there were some really serious scenes I found myself laughing at because the overused CGI. To be honest those are really the only problems I had with the film.
The Verdict
Other than a few crappy characters (which will undoubtedly be in every film ever made) and a few places where the CGI was way to over used this film was great. I really suggest this to everyone out there, just don't go in there with the mentality of the originals are better no matter what and you'll have a good time. On that note I'd like to say that the new movie paid alot of homage to the best of the originals and I think people should respect that. Most directors would have changed things so much the movie wouldn't have been recognizable (which isn't always bad, like Friday the 13th for instance). Over all the movie was a good quick scare if your ever feeling like you need that, it had great promotion, great delivery, and I'm very excited to see the "uncut" (or whatever they decide to call it) version on DVD. I say the movie gets a 4 out of 5.
*Due to misinterpretation I've decided to add some*
OK so some people got the feeling I was saying Jackie was the only good role and everyone else sucked. That is NOT what I'm saying, I'm just saying he is one of the best in the movie. The girl that played Nancy did a fantastic job and the boy that played Quentin was amazing as well. Now I'm not saying these three are the only good ones but their the ones that stand out the most because they have the most screen time out of anyone.
